Eco-Friendly Diwali
What is Diwali
Diwali, or Deepawali, is India's biggest and most important holiday of the year. The festival gets its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (deep) that Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness. This festival is as important to Hindus as the Christmas holiday is to Christians.
Significance of Diwali
Diwali celebrates Rama's eventual defeat of the evil spirit Ravana, and his triumphant return to his home. The business community considers it an auspicious time to start new ventures, as the festival coincides with the Hindu New Year.Diwali is India’s most important holiday—and a celebration of good over evil
Observed by more than a billion people across faiths, this five-day festival of lights brings prayer, feasts, fireworks and, for some, a new year.
People gather to release sky lanterns in celebration of Diwali.
How much Diwali affect environment
The air pollution during Diwali festival by the burning of fireworks.
Air pollution levels have shot up in the Indian capital, Delhi, during the current festive season of Diwali.
There are studies which show that levels of some hazardous pollutants rise significantly during the Diwali period, but there are also other factors that could account for poor air quality.
Around this time of year, Delhi and other cities in northern India, experience worsening air quality because of a combination of factors, not just because of Diwali fireworks.
These include:
• Crop burning by farmers in Punjab and Haryana states
• Exhaust emissions from vehicles
construction and industrial activity in Delhi and surrounding areas
• Weather patterns across the region trapping pollutants in the atmosphere
Since the air quality is bad anyway at this time of year, how do we know what contribution Diwali makes?
In a special report, the CPCB said almost all pollutants reported higher values on Diwali day and pre-Diwali day this year as compared to 2019. It is observed that if compared with 2019
How come Diwali adds to various kinds of pollution
Firing crackers on Diwali increases the concentration of dust and pollutants in the air. After firing, the fine dust particles settle on the surrounding surfaces which are packed with chemicals like copper, zinc, sodium, lead, magnesium, cadmium and pollutants like oxides of sulphur and nitrogen.
Global Warming
Global Warming – Bursting crackers increase heat, carbon dioxide and many toxic gases in atmosphere, which causes rise in temperature of earth and polluted air leading to global warming
What are the negative effects of pollution caused by Diwali on our environment
Air pollution caused by bursting crackers can damage crops and trees in a variety of ways. Ground-level ozone can lead to reductions in agricultural crop and commercial forest yields, reduced growth and survivability of tree seedlings, and increased plant susceptibility to disease, pests and other environmental stresses (such as harsh weather).
Moreover bursting fire crackers adds to noise pollution
Where are crackers banned in India
In big states like Maharashtra, Delhi, West Bengal and Rajasthan, bursting of firecrackers have been completely prohibited. However, some states have permitted the bursting of green crackers with certain conditions. In UP and Bihar, crackers are allowed only in cities with moderate air quality

Use fewer firecrackers
Fewer crackers, but louder bangs this Diwali. Can the use of green crackers reduce pollution levels during Diwali?“
Moreover when Diwali is round the corner, such questions are bound to arise:-
What are eco-friendly crackers and how are they made
The world is becoming more conscious of environmental pollution due to different kinds of human activity. Amidst the growing efforts in every sector to move towards eco-friendly alternatives, eco-friendly crackers mark a new way of celebrating Diwali with less impact on the environment. Green crackers as they are called, eco-friendly crackers are a new initiative by the Indian Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). These crackers feature different formulations than the present crackers and fireworks you will see around in the market. The goal of developing green crackers is to reduce pollution and minimize the health risks.
What are green crackers?
The regular firecrackers pose high degree of pollution and health risks. The green crackers or eco-friendly crackers are manufactured from alternative raw materials to leave a lesser impact on the environment and pose lesser health risks.
The prices of green crackers are lesser than or at least equal to the prices of the regular crackers.
There is no better way of celebrating this Diwali than by buying green crackers you can find easily in the market
Conclusion
To avoid our this generation and future generations to suffer from repercussions of the pollution caused due to Diwali, we must all go for Green Diwali or Eco friendly Diwali
