What is Sleep
Sleep is not a requirement in one's life, what the body requires is rest. Sleep is just one form of rest. A lot of people are beginning to think that if at any place, somebody says, they mean they're sleeping, need not be you can sit and rest. You can stand and also rest, you are running, if you stand, it doesn't feel like rest. If you are standing and if you sit down, doesn't it make you feel rested?
What does rest mean
Rest means you're changing the energy equation where consumption is low, and skewered production is going at the same pace. So after some time, you feel rejuvenated, because consumption has been lowered. Essentially, you are managing the energy equation. If you're inaccurate activity, the consumption is more, producing it is not enough, and after some time you feel exhausted because the consumption has been heavy. If you lower the consumption and increase the production, after some time you feel energised
How to lower the consumption level
Suppose, if you run a mile, after that, you can't take a step, let's say, how many of you are running for the Marathons, I want to do 4 to 42 km, all right. Whenever, after a mile or two, you can't take another step, don't drink anything, don't eat anything. Just sit down for 10 minutes, and again you will feel rejuvenated. All you have done is lower consumption, and production is still at the same level.
Ways to lower consumption and increase productivity
If you come to a certain state of ease when I say ease, it's not something that most people will ever understand. Because most people are not at ease. If you are at ease and the system is at total ease, everything is at ease. It is well-rested, always resting. Because it is so resting throughout the day, if you sleep in the afternoon, you can't sleep much at night, unless you are sick or very tired because of something. Why does sleep not occur in the body? You don't necessarily have to sleep if you sit here, also, and if your body is resting, you will see your sleep quota naturally shrink.
How to increase the quality of sleep
Don't try to increase the quality of sleep. The ideal way to live is that there is no sleep in my life. But that's not possible, right now, because the body has some inertia, so it sleeps at a minimum. The rest of the time it is at ease. If you keep this at ease, then sleep does not occur to the body unless it comes to a certain point of exhaustion. So, the body is never ever asking for sleep, but it's definitely asking for rest. If you do not know how to sit here in a restful manner, try to rest like this. If you can sit here totally at ease, it will sit here for hours, without falling asleep. Otherwise, this is the only way it knows how to rest. Hence, do not try to increase the quality of sleep, there's no such thing, just try to keep your body restful and at ease, consciously.
Try not to increase the sleep quality
If you come and sit down here, just move your attention from the top of the head down to the toes and see if everything is loose and easy, relaxed and at ease, or you're a string-like this, just bring this to ease. As much as you can, not everything is on your conscious level, try to bring everything comfort and you will see suddenly if you are the kind who'll fall asleep at 10 pm if you sit here one hour at ease, your sleep will get postponed by half an hour.
Try not to increase the quality of your life
If you increase the quality of life, which means, nothing in your life, whatever you may be doing from simple breathing to any complex activity, that you do in your life, the quality will not improve, if you cannot do it with ease. If you enhance the quality of your life, naturally the sleep quota will go down.
How will your body die
If the quality of your life goes bad, then you cannot be at ease, and even then you cannot sleep. This means that under stress you cannot sleep.
It means you can’t sleep, not only when you are well-rested, you can't even sleep when you are stressed out. If you are stressed out, and if you do this, you will not live long.
If the quality of your life goes bad, then also you can't sleep, but out of stress. If your body is not taking enough rest, it will die, it will break, and something will go out.
If you are not at ease, that means you are in a disease
You are in a disease; you are in a certain state of ill health. So don't move in stay, in the direction of disease, move into the direction of ease. If you are sleepy, your sleep quota will come down. Quality of sleep will be good because the quality of life is good.

If you increase only the quality of sleep, life does not work like that. If you wake up well in the morning, you will sleep well at night. There are a whole lot of systems to give this to people in Eastern cultures in India, particularly.
So, for those who are not able to dedicate their lives to yoga and the spiritual process, for them it was built into natural culture. At least this much ease you must have that you wake up happily and even, sleep well today.
Hence, one approach should be, I live well because I sleep well, if I'm not living well, I can't sleep well.
So, your focus should be on living well, sleep will automatically come to you.
